Conceptual park plan with integrated hydropower components

LandWorks was retained by the Holm family in collaboration with the Town of Middlebury to develop conceptual plans and a visual simulation to help forward their effort to implement a small-scale hydropower development on the Otter Creek Falls in downtown Middlebury. The area known as Frog Hollow was historically home to multiple generations of mills and infrastructure for hydropower still exists in the form of a sluice running under the Holm’s building on Main Street. The proposed project has the potential to generate 3 to 5 megawatts of electricity which would be fed back into the State grid. We worked closely with the Holms, the Town and hydrological engineers to integrate the proposed generation equipment into the existing site with plans calling for dramatic improvements to Jessica Swift park, which is often flooded at times of high water. The penstock and turbine would be hidden under tiered plazas built of native stone, making the development essentially invisible under an improved park with overlooks, access to the Creek and ample opportunity for interpretation of the Falls, the Creek, Frog Hollow, and hydropower.
