City Center Park

LandWorks established a diverse team including Engineering Ventures, North Woods Ecological Consulting, and Ecological Artist/Designer Jackie Brookner to develop a publicly accessible passive recreation space that would serve South Burlington’s envisioned City Center downtown and surrounding areas.

City Center Park serves the needs of local residents and workers, neighbors, visitors, and people of all ages who seek the benefits of passive recreation in a wooded environment, with a light footprint on the existing natural resources. With boardwalks and bridges over wetland areas, interpretive opportunities throughout the site, and a path system oriented around a central space comprised of an outdoor classroom and natural play area, the park presents a range of nature-based education opportunities. LandWorks also incorporated concepts for natural art/sculpture elements into the plans that create interest without undermining the natural quality of the park. The ecology of the site is enhanced through removal of invasive plant species, and restoration plantings are proposed throughout.

Phase 1 of the project included a robust community process, conceptual designs, cost estimating, and an evaluation matrix to compare alternatives. The City of South Burlington celebrated the park's grand opening in August 2018.

In 2016, this project received a Vermont Public Places Honor Award
