Shawangunk Mountain Scenic Views
In a national search, LandWorks was selected to undertake a ground-breaking project involving 11 municipalities surrounding the unique Shawangunk Mountain Range to develop a guide for protecting scenic resources. The collaborative public planning and analysis process that led to the creation of the publication Scenic Resources in the Shawangunk Mountain Region - A Guide for Planning Boards represents a detailed approach to the identification and protection of scenic qualities. The Guide provides a Smart Growth framework for managing development while preserving scenic values and is one of the most comprehensive of its kind. It was developed specifically for municipalities' use in working with a proposed project on scenic resources in the 88-mile byway region of New York. The Guide was developed as a means to present ideas and suggestions for planning boards, which might not otherwise be aware of design options, and is expected to be a valuable tool. The Guide has been distributed to each of the planning boards in the region, and has even been officially adopted by some communities. The byway partnership will continue to advocate for the Guide's use in the review of development projects.
The project has been awarded the Award of Excellence for Planning from the VT ASLA.
